The withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the E.U. was an arduous negotiations process that took over three years. The most challenging part of the negotiations centered on Northern Ireland and its status. The result was the Northern Ireland Protocol, which has three distinct goals (1) no hard border across the island of Ireland allowing the all-Ireland economy to continue to grow (2) protect the integrity of the E.U.single market for goods (3) facilitate unfettered access for NI goods to the GB market, and the inclusion of NI goods in free trade agreements between the UK and third countries. This hybrid solution has been challenging to implement arousing great fears from the unionist community that their economic and constitutional link to Great Britain is starting to unravel. As result, there have been intense negotiations between the UK and the EU on how the Protocol will work. These negotiations are ongoing. The Ad Hoc Committee works closely with key Brexit experts in Northern Ireland to monitor the progress of these negotiations.
